Rugby is the main sport played by boys in the winter and spring terms. In 2010 Lomond School entered into a unique partnership with Helensburgh RFC Youth Rugby by taking the decision to merge our rugby with the club. This decision was taken to afford every youth rugby player in Helensburgh and Lomond the opportunity to play meaningful competitive fixtures. This has meant that fixtures are now played as Lomond and Helensburgh Rugby with the exception of our Transitus side, which currently competes as a stand-alone Lomond side.
The project has yielded significant success with the sport developing well in both the school and the wider community. There is a deepening and developing relationship between school and club which will be to the long-term benefit of rugby in the Helensburgh area.
Teams are fielded at Transitus, S1, S2, U-15, U-16 and 1st XV level with coaching provided by both Lomond School staff, the local SRU Development Officer and Helensburgh RFC coaches. The teams play against other school sides on Saturday mornings and enter the Scottish Schools Cups at U18 and U16 level.
Lomond will continue to organise their own rugby tours with 2015 seeing the continuation of the school's programme of South African tours taking place.
