This subject is about much more than food: it combines aspects of science, nutrition, problem solving and time management. Students learn about the relationships between diet, health and family, and the management of resources.
Health and Food Technology gives students a valuable insight into:
- what is really in the food we eat every day
- how to plan and cook nutritious meals safely and hygienically
- how to choose the best food for yourself, your friends and family
- the importance of good nutrition and health
- how and why new food products are developed
- how to interpret food labels and how to use this information to make informed choices
The Health and Food Technology Department aims to equip young people with the skills and knowledge to encourage good health and a positive attitude to food throughout life. One of the main aims of the department is to develop and promote skills of independence and confidence in the areas of food preparation and life choices.
The course content provides scope for developing skills, knowledge, understanding and attributes through creative, practical and work-related activities. Further, it develops skills that are recognised as being important for success in the world of work and are essential to being a responsible citizen and a confident individual. The skills and knowledge covered also offer an excellent platform for a range of careers and further study.
During their time in the department, pupils will study a selection of the following topics in Health & Food Technology lessons:
- food safety and hygiene
- nutritional needs
- developing healthy eating choices
- the journey of food
- food product development
The department currently offers National 5 Health and Food Technology, National 5 Hospitality and Higher Health and Food Technology.
N5 and Higher Health and Food Technology are varied courses which can be useful if pupils are interested in the fields of food product development, dietetics, health care, sports nutrition and human resources.
N5 Hospitality develops skills of self-reliance and promotes a wide range of practical and organisational skills. It is a highly practical course and can prepare pupils for a career in hospitality or food product development.
