Boarding School, Scotland - Lomond School

History & Modern Studies

The History Department offers courses in Scottish, British, European and world history from Transitus 2 to Secondary 6. Candidates are presented at Intermediate 2, Higher and Advanced Higher levels. Modern Studies is offered as a one year course at Higher. Currently the department also has responsibility for the delivery of Citizenship classes.

Teachers are enthusiastic about the value of history and politics in the curriculum and in society at large. They use a variety of teaching styles and source material; interactive learning and ICT feature heavily in classroom delivery. The department endeavours to bring history alive with appropriate field trips to UK-based historical sites such as the British Museum, Culloden battlefield and Stanley Mills in Perthshire. Additionally we have annual visits from groups such as the Clanranald Trust who deliver interactive living history workshops.

For senior pupils, the department is building an extensive library resource geared to helping with Higher and Advanced Higher research. In 2005 and 2008 the department organised five day educational trips to Moscow and St Petersburg for our S3-S5 pupils. Over 90 Lomond pupils have now visited these cities. Further European field trips are planned in the next few years.
