The Department of Modern Languages has three large classrooms and one smaller one. All smartboards and the larger classrooms have notebook computers as well. The smaller classroom has a video-conferencing system.
Modern Languages are essential in a broad education, fostering linguistic ability, cultural awareness and clarity of thought and expression.
French is core from J5 until the end of S4. German is introduced as a second language to most pupils in S1 and S2 and is an option from S3. Intermediate 2 Spanish is offered to pupils in S6. The department uses a range of ICT resources and different teaching approaches to complement the coursebook and develop all four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Higher and Advanced Higher exams are taken.
The department offers a range of trips to provide valuable experience of the culture and language. There is a regular trip to Normandy for T2 and S1 pupils and a long-established exchange with a school in Nuremberg. This takes place every two years. An S3/S4 trip to Paris is sometimes available.
A senior pupil from our exchange school in Germany takes on the role of Junior German Assistant. Pupils are introduced to French culture through a range of activities: T2 French Club, the Cinéclub/Kinoclub and trips to the Glasgow Film Theatre/The Goethe Institute.
