Modern Languages are essential in a broad education, fostering linguistic ability, cultural awareness and clarity of thought and expression.
The Department of Modern Languages has three large classrooms and one smaller one. All have smartboards and the larger classrooms have notebook computers as well. The smaller classroom has a video-conferencing system.
French is taught from Nursery and is core from J5 until the end of S4. Spanish is introduced as a second language to most pupils in S1 and S2 and is an option from S3. National 5 Spanish is offered to pupils in S6. The department uses a range of ICT resources and different teaching approaches to complement the coursebook and develop all four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher exams are taken in French. National 5 is available in Spanish and Higher and Advanced Higher will become available for those who have already achieved National 5.
The department is looking to develop new trips and exchanges over the next few years.
Pupils are otherwise introduced to French culture through a range of activities: T2 French Club, the Cinéclub/Kinoclub and trips to the Glasgow Film Theatre/The Goethe Institute.
