Senior School Curriculum

Senior School pupils benefit from a wide range of subject choices and high levels of support and guidance from teachers and staff.

S1 and S2 (Years 8 & 9)

Our S1 and S2 pupils experience a range of subjects across all curriculum areas with courses written specifically to build on their Transitus years (primary 6 & 7) and prepare them for the rigours of National Qualifications. This tailored approach ensures that Lomond pupils are stretched far beyond the national curriculum and have opportunities to develop the skills and attributes required for success.

S3 and S4 (Years 10 & 11)

Pupils commence their National 5 (equivalent to GCSE) courses in S3, and will typically choose eight from our flexible timetable model. They will study each in depth over S3 and S4 and feedback from parents, staff, and – most importantly – pupils indicates that this is the optimum curricular model. Our two-year approach to National 5 gives additional time for real depth and breadth of learning, and the acquisition of skills and knowledge necessary for the fast-paced one-year Higher courses in S5. This option to study eight subjects at National 5 also makes for a more meaningful, progressive and diverse S6 experience as there will be three subjects studied in sufficient depth to pursue as additional Highers in S6.

S5 and S6 (Years 12 & 13)

S5 pupils will study five certificate subjects – usually at Higher or a combination of Higher and National 5. Scottish universities usually base their offers around five Highers, either gained in S5 or across both S5 and S6. In S6 many pupils will chose to return to one or more of their eight National 5 subjects and study this at Higher alongside their Advanced Higher subjects; though a number may also choose to focus on three Advanced Highers. Our Head of Careers and Future Destinations works closely with our pupils to support UCAS applications, facilitate employability experiences and offer guidance about apprenticeships and the world of work. Our Life After Lomond experience in the final weeks of term provides a real bridge between school and beyond.
