Lomond is a candidate school* for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme and pursuing authorization as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.**
We intend teaching these new curricula from August 2021 and will be the first school in Scotland to offer two International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes for pupils in S5 and S6. The IB Diploma Programme and IB Careers-related Programme will run alongside the introduction of an HNC in Business and our current model of SQA Highers and Advanced Highers which offers our pupils an unrivalled choice and flexibility within their post-16 education.
As the only school in Scotland to offer all three of the IB Diploma Programme, the Careers Programme and SQA Highers and Advanced Highers within the curriculum, pupils will be able to choose the pathway most appropriate for them, and will be able to combine individual components to create their own, truly bespoke, curriculum.
IB programmes are lauded by schools around the globe and – along with academic rigour – place a great emphasis on enquiry-based learning and deep conceptual understanding. At the heart of IB Programmes is international mindedness and individual components which prepare young people with the real-life skills and attributes required for success in further education and the world of work. It challenges senior pupils to become more independent in their learning, and demands a range of creative, active and service pursuits alongside academic studies.
Importantly, these courses also provide for young people who struggle with academic examinations but excel in other areas, giving them the kind of teaching they need to succeed. Rather than learning key words, memorising passages and following the exam ‘formula’, the programmes allow us to provide meaningful and engaging experiences that give young people the ability to solve the kind of complex issues society will face in the future such as plastic pollution and global warming.
To foster all-round, and not just academic, development, IB courses are taught with the IB Learner Profile in mind. The Learner Profile is a set of guiding principles which motivate and inspire students, encouraging them to be Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded and more. The IB mission statement and learner profile aligns perfectly with Lomond School’s own Philosophy and Values.
Central to both Programmes is international and intercultural understanding, and the mission of the IB is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better world.

* Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.
**Mission Statement from the IB
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people,
with their differences, can also be right.
