Mathematics | Lomond School


Maths is achievable by all – that is our motto and what underpins our approach to the subject. In doing so, we attempt to dispel as many misconceptions of mathematics as a subject as possible.

We try to emphasise that the journey, not the destination, is as important as the goal and to leave behind the misconception of a unique correct solution or method. By encouraging pupils to talk about mathematics, creating an environment where making mistakes is acceptable and teaching that we really do learn from them, as well as always approaching the subject with a positive frame of mind, we are able to demonstrate that progress in mathematics is absolutely possible and is not just a ‘special’ gene.

 Our philosophy is to ensure that each pupil on leaving Lomond School is numerate, has sufficient skills for the career of their choice and will understand the mathematics likely to be encountered in daily adult life. At more advanced study, it is hoped that senior pupils will acquire the conceptual understanding and logical abilities characteristic of a mathematician.

We aim to provide courses at the appropriate level for each pupil in which they will achieve success in the subject and leave without a fear of maths.

The subject is taught at N5, Higher and Advanced Higher. Some pupils may be entered at National 4 level if that is deemed to be the best option to ensure success.

General objectives for all our pupils are that each pupil should be able to:

  • view mathematics as an essential element in communication
  • appreciate the relationships within mathematics
  • develop imagination and flexibility of the mind
  • work in a systematic way using mathematical rigour
  • perform the basic mathematical skills needed in his career choice or for entry into HE or FE.
  • acquire skills in mathematical thinking with others and to work in a group.
  • identify patterns found in diverse situations and to extrapolate from them.
  • express themselves in a mathematically precise language.
  • see mathematics as flexible, adaptable  and capable of changing.
Mathematics - National 5

This course is designed to develop the learner’s skills in using mathematical language, to explore mathematical ideas, and to develop skills relevant to learning, life and work in an engaging and enjoyable way. It will build on prior learning and develop:

  • operational skills in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics
  • reasoning skills of investigation, problem solving, analysis and modelling
  • numeracy skills in number processes and information handling

Traditional teacher-led lessons and individualised learning take place alongside group activities using co-operative learning and formative assessment strategies to promote active learning and develop reasoning and teamwork skills.

Mathematics - Higher

The difference in standard from National 5 to Higher is significant and usually only pupils achieving National 5 at A or B would be accepted for study at Higher. The course seeks to teach and extend mathematical knowledge previously gained and to facilitate the transition to Advanced Higher.

Mathematics - Advanced Higher

There are two options available to pupils looking to study at Advanced Higher; Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Mathematics of Mechanics). Both require an A or B at Higher.

 Pure Maths looks at the following topics:

  • Graphing Rational Functions
  • Matrices, Complex Numbers
  • Proof & Number Theory
  • Ordinary Differential Equations
  • Second Order Differential Equations
  • Sequences

Mathematics for Mechanics covers the following:

  • Forces, Energy and Momentum
  • Straight Line, Periodic and Parabolic Motion
  • Mathematical Techniques for Mechanics
