Lomond School Maths Star Set for Global Stage at World Championships in Australia

The run-up to her fifteenth birthday will be an unforgettable one for Helensburgh local and Lomond School pupil Blythe Brown, who is set to compete in the week-long Junior Level Finals of the World Mathematics Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

After a standout performance at the Scottish Schools’ Mathematics Competition in June, Blythe earned a finalist “Golden Ticket,” securing her place at the prestigious global event. She will compete in a series of diverse mathematical challenges from Sunday 14 December to Saturday 20 December — before celebrating her fifteenth birthday the day before her flight home to Scotland!

Blythe and fellow finalists from across the world will spend the week in residence at the University of Melbourne, taking part in around fourteen rigorous rounds designed to test a broad range of mathematical skills. These include deep problem-solving tasks, fast-paced logic challenges, and collaborative team events. The programme balances technical precision with creativity and adaptability, while also offering a vibrant residential experience that fosters confidence, teamwork, and international friendship.

Blythe said: “I’m so excited to be attending the Junior Finals. I’ve had so much support from my friends and family and I can’t thank everyone enough for their fundraising efforts. It means the world to me. I’m really looking forward to all the challenges and I hope to do my very best.”

Her Maths Teacher, Mrs Lesley McGarry, and Head of Mathematics, Mrs Jennifer Marsden, added: “We’re both so proud of Blythe. Out of 123 participants in the Scottish Championship, she was one of only 20 pupils to receive a Golden Ticket — a remarkable achievement that reflects her dedication, talent, and hard work. She is a joy to teach, and we have no doubt she’ll do amazingly well in Australia.”

Lomond School Principal, Claire Chisholm, echoed their praise: “The whole school community is behind Blythe. Reaching this stage is an incredible achievement. We’ll be following the results closely each day and can’t wait to hear all about her adventure when she returns.
