Welcome
At Lomond School, we believe in thinking independently and embracing innovation—values shared by our International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy and the global Bitcoin community. We are proud to be the first school in the UK to accept Bitcoin for tuition payments.
But this is more than just about how fees are paid.
We’re also integrating Austrian economics and decentralised technology into our classrooms, helping students explore real-world questions about fairness, innovation, and financial sovereignty.
Whether you’re a parent, student, staff member, or a Bitcoiner, you are welcome to explore how this initiative enhances learning and widens accessibility while also reflecting our school’s commitment to leading with our school values of courage and curiosity.

FAQ
What is Bitcoin and why does Lomond School think it’s special?
Bitcoin is a digital form of money that operates without any central authority. It has a fixed supply, like digital gold, and is not subject to inflation or political control. It’s a hard asset, decentralised, and easily transferable across borders. Importantly, Bitcoin is available to anyone willing to learn—making it more democratic and inclusive, particularly for people in developing nations who lack access to traditional banking. Lomond sees Bitcoin as a perfect real-world case study in economics, computing, ethics, and innovation.
I’ve heard of crypto—is Bitcoin different? Will Lomond School accept other cryptocurrencies?
Yes, Bitcoin is different. While “crypto” is a broad term that includes thousands of digital tokens, most are not truly decentralised. At Lomond, we believe Bitcoin has unique properties—security, scarcity, transparency, and resilience—that set it apart. There are no current plans to accept other cryptocurrencies.
Why is Lomond School accepting Bitcoin?
To offer a modern, secure, and borderless payment option that aligns with our ethos of independent thinking and innovation.
Is Bitcoin the only way to pay fees?
No. We still accept GBP. Bitcoin is an additional option—not a replacement.
Are other schools doing this?
As of April 2025, Lomond School is the first UK school, but other global institutions already accept Bitcoin.
Is Bitcoin compulsory?
Not at all. Bitcoin is simply another way of paying school fees. It’s a hybrid method that we believe will become increasingly useful in the future. We’re making it available now so that parents and prospective families who already use Bitcoin have the flexibility to pay in a way that works for them.
I’ve heard bad things about crypto in the press. Isn’t it risky, and can’t it be used for illegal things? How is Lomond going to make this safe?
These concerns are understandable and important to address. At Lomond, we only work with fully regulated and KYC (Know your Customer)-compliant partners to ensure that every Bitcoin transaction is secure, transparent, and lawful. Our payment system is as safe as those used for traditional currencies, and every transaction is auditable. Bitcoin, like any financial tool, can be misused—but our strict compliance and transparent practices ensure it is used responsibly and professionally.
Is anyone actually going to pay in Bitcoin?
Yes. The introduction of Bitcoin has been in response to requests from local parents as well as international educational agents.
Is this just about payment?
No. It’s also about exploring the future of economics and bringing Bitcoin and Austrian economic principles into our curriculum to prepare students for the uncertain future.
When can parents start paying with Bitcoin?
From the Autumn Term 2025
Will the school hold Bitcoin or convert it to pounds?
Initially, we are not holding Bitcoin and any fees received will be converted to GBP. Over time, and only if our community of Bitcoin-supportive families commits to the initiative, we plan to build a Bitcoin treasury. This would allow the school to retain a small portion of Bitcoin for long-term strategic use. The treasury is a phased goal, not an immediate change, and it depends entirely on community support and the school’s ability to responsibly “stack sats” over time.
What about Bitcoin’s volatility?
Volatility is managed through instant conversion into GBP which means there will be no risk to annual fees.
Is this legal and tax-compliant?
Yes. All Bitcoin transactions will meet UK financial regulations, including anti-money laundering and tax compliance.
What companies is Lomond working with?
We’re collaborating with Musqet and CoinCorner
What is Austrian Economics and why teach it?
A school of thought focused on individual choice, sound money, and limited government intervention—values echoed in Bitcoin’s design.
Will this be part of formal classes?
Yes. Modules will be introduced from August 2025.
What are ‘Bitcoin mining heaters’?
Custom devices built by students to mine Bitcoin and heat classrooms—combining learning, sustainability, and real-world application.
Can staff be paid in Bitcoin too?
This is being considered as a voluntary part of salary under a future scheme.
Is the school avoiding VAT by doing this?
Not at all. All taxes will be paid in full. This is about innovation, not avoidance.
What if I don’t understand Bitcoin?
That’s okay! You don’t need to and you may have no interest—that’s absolutely fine.
As we are a school, a place of learning, and can help you learn if you want to. We’ll provide resources and training for anyone who wants to explore it.
Isn’t Bitcoin bad for the environment?
Not necessarily. In fact, our curriculum will explore Bitcoin mining’s evolving sustainability, including our own pilot projects. Today, the vast majority of Bitcoin mining is powered by renewable or surplus energy sources. According to multiple industry studies, over 50% of Bitcoin’s energy use is already renewable—making it one of the greenest large-scale computing networks in the world.
Scotland itself is forecasted to have an abundance of renewable energy in the years ahead—especially from wind and hydro—creating a natural synergy between our region and Bitcoin’s ideal energy model.
And if you compared Bitcoin’s energy use to the traditional banking system—across all its physical branches, servers, air travel, office buildings, and people—it’s likely that Bitcoin is the more energy-efficient option.
Our students will have the opportunity to explore this topic hands-on, looking at the future of green finance and how innovation can align with sustainability.
How does this benefit students?
They gain a unique education on digital assets, sound economics, and cutting-edge computing—skills that are increasingly valuable.
What if something goes wrong with a transaction?
We use trusted, insured partners with full support. Parents will always have access to clear, auditable payment records.
Where can I ask more questions or get involved?
Reach out via bitcoin@lomondschool.com — we’d love to hear from you!
What if this all goes wrong—will the school lose money?
No. Risk is carefully managed through phased implementation, conversion options, and partnerships with secure service providers. Our financial operations remain robust and well-structured.
Is there a discount for paying in Bitcoin?
No. However, we are constantly reviewing ways to incentivise early adoption and may consider this in the future based on uptake and feedback.
Is Bitcoin regulated in the UK
Bitcoin isn’t directly regulated by the FCA, but the platforms that handle it are. Lomond partners only with FCA-registered or compliant providers like Musket and CoinCorner to ensure all transactions are secure and lawful.
While Lomond itself isn’t a financial institution, we follow best practices—and there’s a clear regulatory roadmap toward full FCA registration by 2026 for the service providers we use. We’re committed to staying ahead of the curve with transparency and responsibility at every step.
