As a school with a real ‘family feel’ we want to offer each pupil individual support where they need it most. Each pupil is known and valued in our school, and we work in close partnership with parents and guardians to get the very best out of every child. Whether the challenge is academic or emotional, our experienced and dedicated team will help your child to develop and grow.
Pastoral Support
Pastoral care across S1-S6 is led by the Pastoral Depute and supported by a team of experienced teaching staff and health professionals. Heads of Year work closely with form tutors to ensure the personal, social and academic welfare of pupils. Form tutors see their form class daily and are the first point of contact for any concerns. Additionally, our two Assistant Year Heads offer one-on-one pastoral support both on an appointment and ‘drop-in’ basis.
The school nurse plays a key role in supporting young people with specific health needs and is available to both pupils and parents. The Academic Depute also works closely with the pastoral team ensuring a joined-up approach which fully meets the needs of pupils.
As a family school our pupils instinctively look out for one another, and there are two well-established peer support systems in place. The S6 Peer Mentors and Academic Mentors offer a friendly face, invaluable guidance and practical help to our younger pupils, supporting them with advice and help with their work.
Additional Support Needs
Lomond School believes that each child we accept has the right to take part in and enjoy every aspect of school life, and we know that some pupils need a little more support than others to do so. Support is provided in class through a range of learning and teaching strategies and via academic mentors. More bespoke support is offered by staff in our friendly and welcoming Support For Learning base. Parents are encouraged to visit us to discuss concerns as soon as these arise, and we offer daily lunchtime and after-school support as required. Ultimately, we aspire that every pupil in our care becomes a fully independent learner by the time they reach the senior years of the school.
Support in both the Junior and Senior School is led by specialist Support for Learning teachers, who work with individuals or small groups of students with identified needs. Pupils for whom English is an additional language are also offered support by a qualified EAL (English as an Additional Language) teacher. In the junior years (J1 – T2) all pupils complete standardised tests annually, primarily for screening purposes. Aspects of this diagnostic group screening are also carried out in S1 – S4 as we believe that the earlier a concern is raised the easier it is likely to be resolved.
